The 2018 Chardonnay was picked late in the year for optimal ripeness and fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve the fruit flavors and provide a clean, refreshing palate. After fermentation, the Chardonnay went through 100% malolactic fermentation and aged sur lie in 100% french oak barrels. The resulting Chardonnay is rich with notes of tropical fruit, brioche, and a hint of vanilla.

The ‘Heritage Series’ Merlot is sourced from some of the best vines Desert Wind Vineyard has to offer. The grapes are fermented in open top bins with twice daily punch-downs to carefully extract color, flavor, and tannins. The wine is then pressed and aged in barrels, with a mix of French and neutral oak, for a total of 16 months. Syrah and Malbec were added to provice bold fruit flavor and complexity. The resulting wine is well structured with moderate acidity and flavors of cherry, cassis, vanilla, and espresso.

Blind tasting forces you to pay close attention, getting used to analyzing what is in the glass rather than what is in your head. These skills can then be applied to tasting more generally, and it has been our experience that the better we get at blind tasting, the better we get at tasting overall!

Portugal or Washington State?  Where are we?
Growing Portuguese varietals in the US is a limited venture. There may be fewer than 200 acres nationwide. We love our rather exclusive vineyard at the Desert Wind Tasting Room. Here we grow about two acres of grapes, varietals which originated in Portugal, and in that country are most often components of fortified port wines. Let us introduce you. 2016 Touriga Nacional in a dry red table style wine and the 2019 in our Rosé style. The 2016 Souzão is the first time we have featured it in a stand alone, we have used it in the past for blending in our Ora blends or our 2018 Rosé.

Our Heritage Series Chardonnay is completely barrel fermented in French oak and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. After fermentation, the wine continues to age in barrel, sur lie, for up to 9 months. This process gives the wine increased complexity, richness, and introduces oak flavors from the barrels. The end result is a full-bodied, complex wine with tropical fruit flavors, vanilla, and toasted sugar.
